About body / arm lift abroad

More often than not, weight loss is followed by stretched sagging skin. Patients facing this problem can choose to undertake one of the body lifts we offer.

Sagging skin in the upper arm requires arm lift abroad, also known as brachioplasty. Having extra skin in the abdominal area and experiencing the laxity of the abdominal wall’s muscles calls for tummy tuck. To fight the excessive bagginess of the thighs, a lift of the inner thighs needs to be performed.

At first, you will be consulted by our plastic surgeon, who will assess your needs & explain the risks and possible complications. For example, patients who have had a mastectomy should not have an arm lift or if you have had phlebitis (inflamed blood vessels) in either of your legs, you may not be a candidate for thigh lift surgery. Plastic surgeon will evaluate your anatomy and together with your own wishes and priorities, a thorough body contouring plan will be developed.

Body lifts step by step

The surgery time depends on the procedures you have chosen but will probably last 2-6 hours. For the majority of the procedures, general anaesthesia is preferred.

  1. Firstly, the incision is made. Then, the surgeon elevates the skin off the underlying structures.
  2. After the extra skin and fat are removed, your skin will be redraped.
  3. Surgeon may insert one or more drains beneath the incisions to facilitate discharge of any fluid that may disrupt your healing.

Thigh lift

Thigh lift is performed by lifting the surplus skin and removing it through incisions in the inner thigh and/or high upper outer thigh. Though incisions are extensive, they cannot be seen with the clothes on. If required, a thigh lift can be done at the same time as liposuction.

Arm lift abroad

In case a patient has no excess skin, only a few areas of fat in the upper-inner arms, she/he can opt for liposuction without the need to remove the skin. Otherwise, arm lift abroad (brachioplasty) is performed to remove the loose and saggy hanging skin. In this case, upper-inner arm from the armpit to the elbow is incised.

Mommy makeover

It’s a surgery, when tummy tuck (abdominoplaty) is combined with other body & breast lifts. In other words, the patient gets a complete makeover.

The name comes from the fact that the surgery is usually done for mums (after one or more pregnancies).

Post-surgery

After the procedure, you will most likely have to stay overnight in the hospital. You will be able to get up and walk the next day. The pain will stay for several following days, but applying cold compresses/ice packs will reduce the pain and swelling. Any drains in your body will be removed by a surgeon within a few days. You will be able to shower and continue your usual everyday activities within about a week after the surgery. All physical activities are allowed 3-4 weeks after a surgery.

After the surgery, compression garment will be applied to the area treated. This garment supports incisions, decreases swelling and bruising that may occur post-operation. It is important that you wear it for 3 following weeks.

Improvement in your body contour will be visible instantly; however, better results will be seen after a week when the swelling diminishes. After your body contouring is done, you will look as good as you feel and will be able to enjoy your new body shape.

Potential complications

These include bleeding, infections, asymmetry and healing problems that can result in heavy scars. The skin is weakened during the surgery, so there is a slim risk of loss of some skin due to insufficient circulation of blood. This risk is bigger for people with certain types of old scars and for people who smoke. It is crucial to quit smoking and using aspirin at least 14 days before the surgery.

FAQs about body lifts

Who is a good candidate for a body lift?

For patients, experiencing surplus skin, fat or other tissues after an extreme weight loss, body lift is an exceptionally effective plastic surgery procedure. You can expect the best results of this procedure if you meet these criteria:

  • You have lost at least 30 percent of your peak weight;
  • You have sagging and loose skin/fat/other tissue in your abdominal area (though you may need to lose more weight before undergoing a body lift if this is mostly fat);
  • You have a steady weight. Weight instabilities can prevent you from getting the best results out of this procedure. It is recommended to wait for about 2 years after reaching your weight goals, to give your skin time enough to adjust and to make sure you will not regain weight after the procedure;
  • You have a good overall health to undergo a general anaesthesia and to recover from the surgery;
  • You do not plan to get pregnant. Getting pregnant after the surgery can reverse your body lift’s results;
  • You will commit to exercising and upholding excellent nutrition. It is crucial in order to heal from the surgery and to maintain your new body shape. Having a protein-rich diet is particularly important before and after the surgery to refuel your recovery;
  • You do not drink or smoke excessively;
  • You have set realistic expectations for the results of the body lift. Your plastic surgeon will do everything to make them as delicate as possible, but incisions will most likely leave scars. Your skin will be smooth after the procedure but may begin to sag again with ageing;
  • Plastic surgery can be a long and emotional process, so you are mentally and psychologically prepared for that;
  • If you have lost weight due to a bariatric surgery, your plastic surgeon will need your bariatric surgeon’s approval to perform the surgery.

How are body lifts carried out? What about results/scars?

For a full tummy tuck the procedure goes like this: surplus skin is pulled down and removed. Then, the belly button is brought through the skin to its normal location. Finally, the scars are hidden in the bikini line. They will be hidden, but they do exist.

For a thigh lift, the surgeon incises upper thigh, lifts the surplus skin and removes it through the incisions. They are extensive, but not visible with the clothes on.

If required, thigh lift can be done at the same time as lift of buttocks, but because scars are left across the buttock or in the fold, this is not a common procedure. Typically patients choose undergoing liposuction instead.

In case a patient has no excess skin, only a few areas of fat in the upper-inner arms, she/he can opt for liposuction without the need to remove the skin. Otherwise, arm lift abroad is performed to remove the loose and saggy hanging skin. In this case, upper-inner arm from the armpit to the elbow is incised.

Improvement in your body contour will be visible instantly; however, better results will be seen after a week when the swelling diminishes. After your body contouring is done, you will look as good as you feel and will be able to enjoy your new body shape.

What about the required stay in Lithuania and recovery period?

You are required to stay in Lithuania for at least 5 days after undergoing a procedure.

Within several days after the procedure, you will be already able to continue your usual daily activities. Within 3-4 weeks after the surgery, all physical activities can be resumed.

What about the possible complications and what if something goes wrong?

Complications are rare. They include: bleeding, infections, asymmetry and healing problems that can result in heavy scars. The skin is weakened during the surgery, so there is a slim risk of loss of some skin due to insufficient circulation of blood. This risk is bigger for people with certain types of old scars and for people who smoke. It is crucial to quit smoking and using aspirin at least 14 days before the surgery.

After the surgery: in case you are feeling unwell or there is anything abnormal, you will be immediately checked upon by the medical personnel. Should there be a need for a follow-up procedure, it would be carried out for you free of charge.

Complication in the later stages of the recovery are even rarer and most of the time not an emergency. If they happen, our surgeon would consult you online and explain the steps to take.

What is included in the price?

Everything for the treatment, anesthesia, 1-2 nights of hospitalisation; all the needed help with the trip, such as finding best airplane ticket deals & accommodation, meeting at the airport, personal driver within Lithuania, phone+SIM card for unlimited calls in Lithuania; needed consultations, medical tests, 24/7 assistance in Lithuania in case something is needed, help with after-care, reliable insurance against injury resulting from malpractice.
