Knee replacement cost, Info & FAQs

Knee replacement surgery (arthroplasty) is a procedure done to replace the weight-bearing surface of a damaged knee joint.

Knee replacement cost & info

If your knee is severely damaged by arthritis or injury, it may be hard for you to perform simple activities, such as walking or climbing stairs. You may even begin to feel pain while you are sitting or lying down. If nonsurgical treatments like medications and using walking supports are no longer helpful, you may want to consider total knee replacement surgery. Joint replacement surgery is a safe and effective procedure to relieve pain, correct leg deformity, and help you resume normal activities.

Signs you may need knee replacement

  • Nonsurgical treatments are no longer effective. If you have arthritis of the knee, you’ll probably start with more conservative measures such as medications, steroid injections, or physical therapy to alleviate your symptoms. But at some point, they may not be enough.
  • Your pain prevents you from doing normal activities or caring for yourself. If you can’t get relief from other treatments, your knee pain may start interfering with your daily life.
  • You have severe pain even when resting, and you can’t sleep. According to our surgeons, pain while at rest that isn’t responding to other measures may make you a good candidate as well.
  • Your knee is always swollen. Swelling is another sign your knee is not responding to other treatments.
  • Your knee has become deformed. If your arthritis is advanced, it can affect the way you walk, which can also lead to further problems elsewhere in your body. In addition, people with arthritis may also lose the ability to straighten their knee
  •  You’re of a certain age. Knee replacement is generally done in older people over 60, in part because younger people’s more active lifestyles may put too much stress on the artificial knee, causing it not to last as long; second replacement surgeries may not be as successful. But, knee replacements can be performed in people of all ages depending on your case, so discuss with your doctor whether you’re a good candidate.

Common Causes of Knee pain

The most common cause of chronic knee pain and disability is arthritis. Although there are many types of arthritis, most knee pain is caused by just three types: osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and post-traumatic arthritis.

  • Osteoarthritis. This is an age-related “wear and tear” type of arthritis. It usually occurs in people 50 years of age and older, but may occur in younger people, too. The cartilage that cushions the bones of the knee softens and wears away. The bones then rub against one another, causing knee pain and stiffness.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis. This is a disease in which the synovial membrane that surrounds the joint becomes inflamed and thickened. This chronic inflammation can damage the cartilage and eventually cause cartilage loss, pain, and stiffness. Rheumatoid arthritis is the most common form of a group of disorders termed “inflammatory arthritis.”
  • Post-traumatic arthritis. This can follow a serious knee injury. Fractures of the bones surrounding the knee or tears of the knee ligaments may damage the articular cartilage over time, causing knee pain and limiting knee function.

What's knee replacement?

Knee replacement surgery (arthroplasty) is a procedure to replace the weight-bearing surface of a damaged knee joint. It results in the pain being relieved and your movement ability increased. It’s only carried out if other treatment methods (e.g. physiotherapy, medications, braces) are not suitable for the patient.

How long do the new joints last?

Around 85% of the replaced joints will last more than 20 years.

Who does the knee replacement surgery?

Knee replacement is most commonly performed for patients who suffer from osteoarthritis; rheumatoid arthritis; psoriatic Arthritis; hemophilia; or knee injury. If you have a stiff, painful knee and it is difficult to move it fully or to perform daily activities, you should consult with a specialist.

Why do people go for surgery abroad?

Patients go for knee replacement abroad for multiple reasons. Main ones are:

  • There are no (or very short) waiting lines for orthopedic surgeries
  • Individual attention from the surgeons
  • Recommendations from previous patients, friends, or family
  • Top quality service for affordable prices
  • Possibility for a refund from your local health board
  • All-inclusive rehabilitation packages

Can I get a refund from my local health board?

You can have your surgery done for free by claiming a refund from your local health board. We are helping patients with the documentation needed in order to claim a refund after following the EU directive route for medical treatment abroad. Patients usually choose this route because of the long waiting list in their country of origin.

Will I be insured?

Our patients are covered by reliable insurance covering surgical malpractice. Yet, first & foremost, we ensure maximum safety.

Why is knee replacement cost lower in your clinic?

Our clinic is not based in the center of Stockholm or London and does not have to pay eye-watering rents. We also work with a limited number of patients and do now waste massive sums on marketing. Therefore, you pay only for the surgery (and not for an expensive location or advertising on TV or on the tube). At the same time, you get an all-inclusive package (making your travel stress-free) when booking with us.

Is it safe?

Getting the surgery abroad involves similar risks as getting the surgery at home. For that reason, we recommend always checking the following:

  • The surgeons and their credentials. Preferably, ask for an online consultation to meet your surgeon before going abroad
  • What do the previous patients say about the clinic and their experience
  • Whether you will be insured

Never base your decision on the price alone.

What about the recovery? How soon can I travel back home?

After knee replacement, you will be hospitalized for a few days (and our specialists with helping you with immediate recovery). Firstly, you will be walking with assistance or a walking stick. Yet, after 1 month, you will be already seeing massive positive changes. In six weeks (following the surgery) the patients usually walk with minimal help. Full recovery takes up to 6 months. Traveling back home Most of the patients can travel back 6-7 days after the surgery. However, patients who are overweight or have additional health issues may need to stay a bit longer – for 8-10 days. For your flight back it is advisable to get special assistance to help to get in/out of the plane. The service is freely provided by the airports/airlines.

How soon will I be able to drive after knee replacement?

Most of the patients can drive in 3-4 weeks after the surgery.

What implants do you use for knee replacement surgery?

Our clinic uses only top-notch knee implants such as Zimmer Biomet, and Smith & Nephew. These implants have a very low dislocation rate. LEGION knee replacement system by Smith & Nephew:

  • exceptional strength;
  • low wear rate;
  • greater bone mass preservation during surgery due to the original design of the prosthesis and minimal removal of articular surfaces;
  • excellent biocompatibility thanks to the OXINIUM◊ alloy used in the prosthesis, which has been found to be hypoallergenic, even among those with metal allergies. OXINIUM◊ alloy contains: cobalt (<0.002%), chromium (<0.02%) and nickel (<0.0035%).

OXFORD partial knee joint endoprosthesis by Zimmer Biomet. Today, it is the most popular partial knee implant in the world, characterized by excellent clinical results. Studies show that as many as 47.6 % of all knee joint endoprosthetic surgeries (endoprosthetic replacement) can be performed using the partial knee joint endoprosthetic methodology. Why is it worth choosing “Oxford®” partial knee joint endoprosthesis?

  • With more than 35 years of clinical experience, “Oxford®” is the world’s most widely-used and clinically-based partial knee joint system.
  • “Oxford®” avoids damage to the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments and provides better proprioception (the ability to perceive and control body position).
  • The implant-fitted spherical design reduces contact stress during full-amplitude movements.

A partial knee joint endoprosthesis is used to treat early arthrosis of the knee joint by replacing only one side of the knee joint affected by the medical condition. Replacing only part of the joint preserves the healthy side with the ligament, and the smaller size of the implant results in a smaller incision, making the surgery minimally invasive. For these reasons, the post-surgical period improves, there is less pain, and the function of movement is restored faster. Moreover, studies show that the survival rate of a partial joint implant over a 10-year period is as high as 93.3 %.

Will I need to redo my home after the knee replacement surgery?

You will not need any special changes in your daily environment.

What exactly is included in the package?
  • Everything for the treatment, anesthesia, 2-3 nights of hospitalization;
  • Implants (Zimmer Biomet, Smith & Nephew)
  • Necessary stay at a city-center hotel;
  • Needed consultations, medical tests;
  • Finding the best airplane ticket deals;
  • Meeting at the airport, personal driver within Lithuania;
  • 24/7 assistance in Lithuania;
  • Reliable insurance covering surgical malpractice.
Are there any possible complications? What if something goes wrong?

Just as with any other surgery, certain complications are possible. These include:

  • Infections (below 1% of cases)
  • Deep vein thrombosis (up to 15% of cases)
  • Nerve injuries (1-2% of cases)
  • Persistent pain (up to 15% of the patients)
  • Loss of motion, instability, stiffness of the knee
  • Unexpected bleeding
  • Failure of the implant during the first 5 years (2% of cases)

During the consultations with the surgeon, you will be fully informed & guided through all potential complications. What if they occur: While you are still in Lithuania: in case you are feeling unwell or there is anything abnormal, you will be immediately checked upon by the medical personnel. Should there be a need for a follow-up procedure, it would be carried out for you free of charge. A complication in the later stages of the recovery is even rarer and most of the time, not an emergency. If they happen, our surgeon would consult you online and explain the steps to take.
