Movement is one of the most important things in every person’s life, so even the smallest disorder that starts to restrict movement severely bitter the life. One of these disorders – is hip joint wear.

Hip joints are responsible for two main functions – mobility and stabilization. First, they let you move forwards and backward, to sides and turn. Second, hips amortize hits to the upper body and that is vitally important for the human organism. Over time the cartilaginous tissue covering the joints wears away and joints become painful and stagnant, so usually the only method to heal that is to change the joint with an implant.

Which implants are the best?

Both the ball and the socket of the hip joint are replaced with an implant. Titanium metal has a long history of established effectiveness in hip replacement and continues to be preferred by many surgeons. The longevity of implants depends on many factors, such as types of activities and weight. At Gijos Klinikos our surgeons use only excellent biocompatibility titanium Zimmer Biomet and award-winning ceramic metal Smith & Nephew implants. They both are a combination of rich clinical heritage with modern technological advancements. Each of these is designed to address the distinct needs of individual patients while simplifying surgical workflow.

Common Causes of Hip Pain

The most common cause of chronic hip pain and disability is arthritis. Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and traumatic arthritis are the most common forms of this disease.

  • This is an age-related wear and tear type of arthritis. It usually occurs in people 50 years of age and older and often in individuals with a family history of arthritis. The cartilage cushioning the bones of the hip wears away. The bones then rub against each other, causing hip pain and stiffness. Osteoarthritis may also be caused or accelerated by subtle irregularities in how the hip developed in childhood.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis. This is an autoimmune disease in which the synovial membrane becomes inflamed and thickened. This chronic inflammation can damage the cartilage, leading to pain and stiffness. Rheumatoid arthritis is the most common type of a group of disorders termed inflammatory arthritis.
  • Posttraumatic arthritis. This can follow a serious hip injury or fracture. The cartilage may become damaged and lead to hip pain and stiffness over time.
  • An injury to the hip, such as a dislocation or fracture, may limit the blood supply to the femoral head. This is called osteonecrosis (also sometimes referred to as avascular necrosis). The lack of blood may cause the surface of the bone to collapse, and arthritis will result. Some diseases can also cause osteonecrosis.
  • Childhood hip disease. Some infants and children have hip problems. Even though the problems are successfully treated during childhood, they may still cause arthritis later in life. This happens because the hip may not grow normally, and the joint surfaces are affected.

Everything about hip replacement in our clinic

What's hip replacement?

Hip replacement surgery is a procedure in which a doctor surgically removes a painful hip joint with arthritis and replaces it with an artificial joint often made from metal and plastic components. Materials used in making your artificial joints are strong and designed to last inside your body.

It’s usually done when all other treatment options have failed to provide adequate pain relief.

What are the most common causes leading to hip replacement?

These are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, traumatic arthritis, and avascular necrosis.

Even though the procedure can be performed for everyone, in most cases it is performed for people above 50.

What about the clinic & surgeons?

Why do people go for surgery abroad?

Patients go for hip replacement abroad for multiple reasons. The main ones are:

  • There are no (or very short) waiting lines for orthopedic surgeries
  • Individual attention from the surgeons
  • Recommendations from previous patients, friends, or family
  • Top-quality service for affordable prices
  • Possibility for a refund from your local health board
  • All-inclusive rehabilitation packages

Read/watch reviews of our previous patients below.

Can I get a refund from my local health board?

You can have your surgery done for free by claiming a refund from your local health board. We are helping patients with the documentation needed in order to claim a refund after following the EU directive route for medical treatment abroad. Patients usually choose this route because of the long waiting list in their country of origin.

Will I be insured?

Our patients are covered by reliable insurance covering surgical malpractice. Yet, first & foremost, we ensure maximum safety.

Why is hip replacement cost lower in your clinic?

Our clinic is not based in the center of Stockholm or London and does not have to pay eye-watering rents. We also work with a limited number of patients and do not waste massive sums on marketing. Therefore, you pay only for the surgery & world-class rehabilitation (and not for an expensive location or advertising on TV or on the tube).

At the same time, you get an all-inclusive package (making your travel stress-free) when booking with us.

Is it safe?

Getting the surgery abroad involves similar risks as getting the surgery at home. For that reason, we recommend always checking the following:

  • The surgeons and their credentials. Preferably, ask for an online consultation to meet your surgeon before going abroad
  • What do the previous patients say about the clinic and their experience
  • Whether you will be insured

Never base your decision on the price alone.

How soon can I travel back home after hip replacement?

Most of the patients can travel back 6-7 days after the surgery. However, patients who are overweight or have additional health issues may need to stay a bit longer – for 8-10 days.

For your flight back it is advisable to get special assistance to help get in/out of the plane. The service is freely provided by the airports/airlines.

What about the recovery after hip replacement surgery abroad?

Already after the first day of the surgery most of the patients feel better than before. That’s because they don’t feel any arthritic pain. Surely, there might be pain along the incision (which can be managed with painkillers).

Eating and drinking are usually allowed on the first day too. After the first day, most of the patients can sit up on the edge of the bed and stand. On the third day, patients can walk slowly using crutches with the clinic’s help.

All the pain is normally gone 7 days following the surgery and painkillers are not required, however, there are some restrictions for movement.

4/6 weeks after the surgery the patients can already enjoy an active lifestyle.

How soon will I be able to drive after hip replacement?

Most of the patients can drive in 3-4 weeks after the surgery.

What implants do you use for hip replacement surgery?

Our clinic uses only top-notch hip implants such as Zimmer Biomet, Smith & Nephew. These implants have a very low dislocation rate.

VERILAST◊ hip replacement technology by Smith & Nephew, consisting of an OXINIUM◊ femoral head and a polyethylene (XPLE) liner.

Characteristics:

  • durability;
  • low wear rate;
  • faster bone ingrowth;
  • the stem shape of the prosthesis allows for easy implantation via a smaller surgical incision;
  • excellent biocompatibility: OXINIUM◊ is composed of highly biocompatible metals (alloyed from zirconium and niobium).
Will I need to redo my home after the hip replacement surgery?

You will not need any special changes in your daily environment.

What exactly is included in the package?
  • Everything for the treatment, anesthesia, 2-3 nights of hospitalization;
  • Implants (Zimmer Biomet, Smith & Nephew)
  • Necessary stay at a city-center hotel;
  • Needed consultations, medical tests;
  • Finding the best airplane ticket deals;
  • Meeting at the airport, personal driver within Lithuania;
  • 24/7 assistance in Lithuania;
  • Help with after-care, reliable insurance against surgical malpractice.
What are the possible complications? What if something goes wrong?

Complications after hip replacement are rare, yet they may occur (as is with any other surgical procedure). There is an increased risk for obese people, who are advised to undergo weight loss treatments prior to hip replacement. The complications include:

  • Joint infection
  • Blood clots
  • Leg-length Inequality
  • Hip implant dislocation
  • Implant loosening
  • Nerve injury
  • Bleeding, fracture, stiffness

You will be guided through all the possible complications during your consultation(s) with the surgeon.

In case you are feeling unwell or there is anything abnormal:

While you are still in Lithuania: you will be immediately checked upon by the medical personnel. Should there be a need for a follow-up procedure, it would be carried out for you free of charge.

The complication in the later stages of the recovery is even rarer and most of the time, not an emergency. If they happen, our surgeon would consult you online and explain the steps to take.
