Gastric balloon

A Gastric Balloon surgery is performed under conscious sedation, deep sedation, or general anesthesia by a team of experienced surgeons.

The procedure is done in the endoscopy unit as an outpatient procedure. You’ll be sedated for the procedure.

During the procedure, the surgeon advances a thin tube (catheter) loaded with the intragastric balloon down your throat into your stomach. Next, the doctor advances an endoscope – a flexible tube with a camera attached – down your throat into your stomach. The camera allows your doctor to see the balloon as he fills it with saline.

The procedure takes about half an hour. You can normally go home one to two hours after the procedure is finished.

You typically qualify for bariatric surgery if you have a BMI higher than 29. The gastric balloon can be used in a staged approach for patients who are too heavy to go directly to weight loss surgery or as the main treatment for patients who are too high risk to have surgery. It can sometimes be used as an alternative for patients who do not wish to have surgery or do not meet the recommended minimum weight guidelines for surgery.

Most of the patients can travel back 2-3 days after the surgery.

For your flight back it is advisable to get special assistance to help to get in/out of the plane. The service is freely provided by the airports/airlines.

Patients after gastric balloon surgery need about a 1-2 week recovery period, (although some can take as long as 4 weeks) before they can return to work.

We advise that you should not drive a motor vehicle for 2-3 days after your gastric balloon operation. This is to allow the effects of any anesthetic and any post-operative painkillers to wear off.

In order to get the most out of your weight loss surgery, it’s going to take a lot of hard work on your part post-surgery. That includes working out on a regular basis. Depending on your health and how your body is healing, your doctor may allow you to engage in light exercising in the first two weeks after surgery.

A patient can expect to lose as much as 30-40% of excess body weight. Losing a significant amount of weight can lower the risk of various obesity-related health problems, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, sleep apnea and type 2 diabetes.

Complications after gastric balloon are rare, yet they may occur (as is with any other surgical procedure). The complications include:

• Sore throat.
• Reflux symptoms
• Abdominal pain or cramps
• Nausea or vomiting
• Bleeding (very rare)
• Airway and breathing complications (very rare).

You will be guided through all the possible complications during your consultation(s) with the surgeon.

In case you are feeling unwell or there is anything abnormal:

While you are still in Lithuania: you will be immediately checked upon by the medical personnel. Should there be a need for a follow-up procedure, it would be carried out for you free of charge.

The complication in the later stages of the recovery is even rarer and most of the time, not an emergency. If they happen, our surgeon would consult you online and explain the steps to take.
