The surgery is done under general or spinal anesthesia. Your shoulder is composed of a head, upper arm bone and a socket. The top end of your upper arm bone is shaped like a ball, which is held by muscles and liagaments to shoulder bone. During the total shoulder replacement, which takes for about 2 hours, the head of the joint is replaced with a metal ball attached to a stem, and a plastic socket. Depending on the situation a partial replacement can be made, which included replacing only one part of the joint (e.g. only the ball). The type of surgery needed depends on each particular case due to different level of injuries and disabilities.
After the procedure you will be hospitalized up to nine days. During them you will be carefully looked after by professional specialists. You may start you rehabilitation in Lithuania as well.
You will get to know everything about the procedure during your free online consultation with the orthopedic doctor that would be treating you here in Lithuania.
It is advised for the patients that overcome the procedure to get physiotherapy rehabilitation in order to successfully complete the whole shoulder replacement procedure. You will get instructions from your doctor that will be treating you. For up to 2 months you will have to limit your moves with the arm: you cannot drive a car, lift heavy things or stretch the arm inadequately.
As in any other surgical procedure there are certain risks involved:
- Blood clots
- Rotator cuff tear
- Nerve injury.
- Problems with wound healing.
- Lack of motion
- Dislocation or fracture of the upper arm bone
- Joint instability
