Gastric plication abroad

Gastric plication is a relatively new, minimally invasive, weight-loss surgery technique that reduces the size of the stomach capacity to approximately 3 ounces.
The procedure does not involve the use of an implanted device (such as gastric banding). Also, unlike the gastric sleeve procedure, gastric plication may be reversible because a portion of the stomach is not removed.

In addition, unlike gastric bypass, gastric plication does not involve rerouting and reconnecting the intestines.
It is a restrictive weight-loss surgery, meaning that it restricts the amount of food the stomach can hold. You will feel full sooner so you won’t want to eat as much.

FAQs about gastric plication surgery abroad

What's gastric plication surgery?

How long will I be off work after gastric plication?

Gastric plication uses laparoscopic techniques resulting in faster recovery and less scarring than open surgery. The hospital stay is typically 24 to 48 hours. Recovery times may vary, but patients can generally return to work and normal activities within seven to 10 days.

Who is a good candidate for gastric plication?

You typically qualify for this type of bariatric surgery if you have a BMI higher than 30 and your weight has stayed the same for at least a couple of years.

If you had serious nonsurgical weight-loss attempts but had no results.

Also, the most important aspect is if a person is willing to make significant lifestyle changes after surgery.

Why do people go for surgery abroad?

Patients go for bariatric surgeries abroad for multiple reasons. Main ones being:

  • There are no (or very short) waiting lines for bariatric surgeries
  • Individual attention from the surgeons
  • Recommendations from previous patients, friends, or family
  • Top-quality service for affordable prices
  • Possibility for a refund from your local health board

Will I be insured?

Yes, absolutely. Every patient of our clinic is covered by reliable insurance resulting from surgical malpractice.

Why is gastric plication cost lower in your clinic?

Our clinic is not based in the center of Stockholm or London and does not have to pay eye-watering rents. We also work with a limited number of patients and do not waste massive sums on marketing. Therefore, you pay only for the surgery & world-class rehabilitation (and not for an expensive location or advertising on TV or on the tube).

At the same time, you get an all-inclusive package (making your travel stress-free) when booking with us.

Is it safe?

Getting the surgery abroad involves similar risks as getting the surgery at home. For that reason, we recommend always check the following:

  • The surgeons and their credentials. Preferably, ask for an online consultation to meet your surgeon before going abroad
  • What do the previous patients say about the clinic and their experience
  • Whether you will be insured

Never base your decision on the price alone.

Can I get a refund from my local health board?

You can have your surgery done for free by claiming a refund from your local health board. We are helping patients with the documentation needed in order to claim a refund after following the EU directive route for medical treatment abroad. Patients usually choose this route because of the long waiting list in their country of origin.

How soon can I travel back home after gastric plication?

Most of the patients can travel back 6-8 days after the surgery.

For your flight back it is advisable to get special assistance to help to get in/out of the plane. The service is freely provided by the airports/airlines.

What about the recovery after gastric plication surgery abroad?

In the first couple of days after gastric plication surgery, the main goal of a patient must be to stay adequately hydrated and ensure a sufficient protein intake. Drink at least 1,5 liters of clear liquids, such as broth, water, herbal tea, etc., which should be consumed together with 50-60 grams of protein per day in the first week. Avoid juice or soda water as it contains excessive amounts of sugar which are difficult to digest soon after the operation and also can cause pain and discomfort in the abdominal area, vomiting.

How soon will I be able to drive after gastric plication?

You should not drive for 2-3 days after your operation to allow the effects of the anesthetic and any post-operative analgesia (painkillers) to wear off. Thereafter you may find driving a little uncomfortable until the port sites have fully healed, usually around 10 days.

When can I start exercising after surgery?

In order to get the most out of your weight loss surgery, it’s going to take a lot of hard work on your part post-surgery. That includes working out on a regular basis. Depending on your health and how your body is healing, your doctor may allow you to engage in light exercising in the first two weeks after surgery.

How much weight do you lose in the first month after gastric plication?

During the first year after surgery, morbidly obese patients with pre-operative BMI greater than 40 are expected to experience a profound weight loss with a BMI down to 30-32. On the whole, it is common for patients to lose about 30-55 % of their excess weight after gastric plication. Exercising regularly, having one’s diet balanced, and staying hydrated may significantly improve and prolong the post-operative result, too.

What about the clinic & surgeons?

We like to say that our clinic (based in Lithuania, EU) is not a factory. That is we work only with a limited number of patients per year. That helps us to provide our best and give much-needed personal attention to the patients.

The clinic itself is equipped with the newest medical technologies. Naturally, it checks all the EU care standards and employs maximum safety measures. After surgeries, the patients stay in cozy single-bed rooms. It makes your recovery calm and pleasant.

Our brand is rated 4.8/5 by hundreds of UK & EU patients. See their (video) reviews here.
