Surgery is usually performed on both ears so that they would appear symmetrical. For adults the procedure is done under local anesthesia, but it may also be performed using general anesthesia. The whole procedure takes from one to two hours.
The procedure involves cutting the back side of the outer ear shell. The ear shell cartilage is then weakened so that it can be folded and stay in its proper position. Sometimes excess skin or the cartilage is removed. After the surgery, head bandages are applied. When these dressings are removed, the patient must wear a headband during sleep for a few weeks to keep the stitches from pulling out.
The surgery is usually carried out on an outpatient basis. It is advised to stay in Lithuania for 5 days following the surgery. Infection is rare and typically handled with antibiotics. Other possible complications include bleeding, small irregularities, visible scars, asymmetry, and temporal sensibility loss. After several weeks, swelling and bruising gradually go away.
